i am in the process of converting my itunes library into MP3 format, so that i can squash a bunch of albums onto one cd, and therefore have a lot more storage space for my music.
when i first got my ipod, a good friend of mine was kind enough to talk/walk me through the computer process of an ipod, and there was a lot of stressing on my part because i am terrified of computers. they always seem to have something wrong with them and in some sort of process of breaking down.
for some reason (mikshir, would you like to chime in??), everything was imported into my itunes as mpeg4 which is not as user friendly as mp3 format. now that i realize that mp3 is "better" and makes more sense, i now have to convert a lot of the files so that i can compile them better. and so here's the thing i have discovered (maybe mikshir already knows...) that i HATE about itunes:
- if you have imported anything purchased from itunes in as mpeg4, you are now screwed (unless you know someone that can rectify this, hint, hint.). i tried to convert the mpeg4 files into mp3 format, and itunes won't let me do this because "the files are protected". this sucks, because i was going to put all my jack johnson albums into one folder and burn it, but i can't now.
and in the weirdest way, i feel cheated. i feel tricked. i feel like a knucklehead who should've known better. sigh. what is in store for me and itunes? if this romance going to last? is there hope for some sort of reconciliation? i think that on some level, i will, in time, be able to forgive itunes for this, but i still feel that it's a little unfair. is it not enough that they have my money, my time spent organizing, uploading, and listening to my beloved music and audiobooks in their pricey fomat? am i going to have to freaking repurchase my music so that i can burn in mp3?? who put the bop in the bop shoo bop?!?

you're purchased itunes music are not lost, but you do have to jump through some hoops to get it to mp3 format.
Does this mean that you've found your ipod?
sigh, no. i still have the ipod program, called itunes installed in my computer... i can import/export music, but i have no ipod to put it all on...

Google "mp4 to mp3 converter" to see if any of these software options would work for you . . . although mikshir probably already suggested it.

So glad to hear you're becoming comfortable with MP3. Although TofU will argue there are better things out there (and I do believe him even though I have no experience with anything but MP3), MP3 is what the masses (including myself) have latched onto.
TofU and I have had a few conversations about computers and MP3 and the ease of handling one's music. I am still in the process of converting my collection. It is absolute heaven to have the majority of my music at my fingertips. Rather than taking the time to record CDs in "real-time", MP3 allows for quick and easy transferring and compiling.

wait a minute, ronin, you are converting to mp3s? when did this happen? did u get an ipod? or do u put them on your minidiscs?
ah yes, the joys of consolidation, music, and fingertips. it has opened up a few new possibilities and made others more convenient and efficient. of course, this creates more work. at some point, i should cleanse my collection of those items that actually do not like. but to do that i must listen to and rate each of the pieces. someday it will be done.
now.. what to do about all the vinyl and cassette tape items that i have amassed...

Speaking of vinyls and cassettes I'm still waiting for Screg to convert mine onto CD's.
K-9: I've known about MP3 for years and even converted lots of my stuff some time ago (at 128 kbps). I recently felt the urge to re-rip all of my stuff, although it is a lengthy process. But with more powerful computers and larger hard drives and portable drives, storing one's music is quite easy. And with portable players being made to handle MP3, well... what can I say? It's just so much easier compile, add, delete, etc. And... no... I haven't gotten and IPOD. I still stubbornly cling to the minidisc, which can also handle MP3.

they actually have phonograph players with a usb connection that'll plug in the computer and will allow you to save your music as mp3s. Don't ask me about the quality . . . i know the price is a little over $100. Also, I know that there is a similar device that lets you do it with cassettes.
